Back in the summer of 2005, I was in Utah finishing my business degree. One sunny day, I found myself eating cotton candy at the Utah State Fair. It was at that moment, I knew I should start a cotton candy business in our small Alaskan town. I knew it would be a treat for the kids!
That fall, we returned to our home in western Alaska. My mind was in overdrive thinking up ideas for the business. We had figured out a great name, Tundra Cotton, named after the flower that grows in abundance on the arctic tundra. The plans were coming together nicely and I had researched all of the supplies I needed to order. But about a week later, my husband was offered a job in Palmer. Yea! We were moving to the city, to the road system! So the cotton candy was put on hold (but not forgotten.)
One day in June of 2007, I was searching Craigs*list, and I found a cotton candy machine for sale in Anchorage. And on that day, I just happened to have the money to buy it! On the way back from picking it up, I saw a sign for Colony Days happening in a week. So I quickly got my business license and a booth ready. My first day was a lot of fun. Thanks to the wind, the cotton candy was flying EVERYWHERE! Kids were catching free samples. All I could do was laugh and have fun. I had a lot of learning to do!
